Overview

Common carp (Cyprinus carpio) is one of the most important aquaculture species and is cultured in over 100 countries in the world with an annual global production of 3.4 million metric tons. Other than its value as food fish, common carp is also important ornamental fish, e.g. koi from Japan and color carp from China. The diploid genome of common carp has 100 chromosomes, which are twice as many as most other cyprinids. Molecular evidence suggested that the genome may be involved an additional round of whole genome duplication (WGD) than most other teleost, which tetraploidized the genome.

Due to the importance, Common Carp Genome Project (CCGP) was imitated by the Centre for Applied Aquatic Genomics, Chinese Academy of Fishery Sciences in 2009. Heilongjiang Fishery Research Institute and Beijing Institute of Genomics, Chinese Academy of Sciences joined and collaborate for CCGP. CCGP is aiming to develop genome sequences, maps and genetic tools for comprehensive understanding of common carp genome, boosting genome-assistant breeding and selection on domesticated common carp worldwide.

March 20, 2013: Prof. Xiaowen Sun and Dr. Peng Xu, Jiongtang Li, Jian Xu participated the first PAG Asia conference at Singapore.
October 15th, 2012: The 250 K high density SNP array for common carp was constructed with Affymetrix Axiom platform. The array will be available for common carp genome and genetic research community after evaluation.
Professor Xiaowen Sun participate in PAG conference at San Diego.

CCGP project leading scientist, Prof. Xiaowen Sun, participated in the PAG at San Diego on January, accompanied by Dr. Peng Xu, Xumin Wang, Jiongtang Li and Guiming Liu. Dr. Peng Xu gave a 15-minute talk on the Aquaculture Workshop and introduced the latest progress of CCGP in China.
